A System Theoretical Approach to Depression

Can a patient suffering from depression be considered as a dynamic system which interacts with the environment? How can this system be identified? Is "System Theory" a suitable platform to use for quantifying some qualitative statements about "Depression"? The purpose of this project is to address the above questions.
