The institute’s research activities focus on questions of hydraulic engineering and on questions of the effects of climate change in coastal areas. Emphasis is placed on research on protection against too much water as a result of storm surges, inland flooding and heavy precipitation, and on water management during droughts as protection against too little water. Other focal points include sediment transport and technical solutions for erosion control, as well as the use and development of estuarine areas.
