The coastal region of Soc Trang Province, Vietnam is located in the sphere of influence of the Mekong Delta and is characterised by its discharge regime as well as by the tidal regime of the South China Sea. The northeast monsoon causes an increased coastal long-shore drift, which effects strong erosion at that coastal section. The GTZ project ¿Management of Natural Resources in the Coastal Zone of Soc Trang Province¿, which aims to protect and sustainably use the coastal wetlands for the benefit of the local population, initiated this survey to protect coastal profiles threatened with erosion. In the frame of the project the Institute of River and Coastal Engineering at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) cooperates with the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research (SIWRR) in Ho Chi Minh City. Field measurements of currents, waves and suspended sediment concentrations are carried out along the coast of Soc Trang Province during the northeast and southwest monsoon season. The aim of the survey is the design of sustainable erosion protection for endangered dyke sections. Available data, the results of the field measurements and of a numerical model are analysed holistically to design an adequate erosion protection method in the pilot area and to assess the consequences of that measure.
