Distributed Control of Interconnected Systems There are many systems which consist of similar units directly interacting with their nearest neighbours. The resulting system often displays rich and complex behaviour when viewed as a whole. There are many examples of such systems. These include: automated highways, formation flight of airplanes, satellite constellations and micro-cantilever array control. An important aspect of these systems is that sensing and actuation capabilities exist at every unit. One approach to deal with such system is to use standard control design techniques to the lumped system. However, this may result in limitations as optimal techniques cannot handle large scale systems efficiently. Also any centralized control of such a system is hard, if not impossible, to realize. This project deals with the problem of developing efficient tools to design optimal decentralized controllers for such interacting systems.
