Despite higher mobile network capabilities and a new generation of powerful mobile phones with video and gaming features, mobile data revenues still lag behind industry expectations. The main objectives of the Mobile Information and News Data Services for 3G (MINDS) project was development of mobile services for availability of news content to the European citizens, localization of the news content, enhancement of current content exchange standards, optimization of content provision work flows and defining best practice models based on open standards. The project consortium included five leading news agencies and four technology providers from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungry and Holland. During the eighteen months of intensive project work, the project consortium achieved its goals by developing 12 innovative mobile services for the content industry. The MINDS services range from time critical delivery of news to the average mobile user interested in getting complete coverage of a news story as it unfolds in various formats and through various channels to the more multimedia entertainment content. The MINDS service ¿multilingual news¿ provides the mobile user the access to multilingual news content based on his home country and the visited country. The project has provided the opportunity to optimize the existing work flows within the project partners for delivery of news content for mobile services as well as to extend cooperation with other standardization bodies for developing new standards for the content exchange. At the end of the project the 12 innovative mobile services developed within the MINDS project were demonstrated to the public. The main features of these services are: time critical delivery of breaking news, a complete follow up of a running news story in various formats, news content in many languages, localization of news content, integration of local and regional news paper content, building local communities, timely and localized alarming the general public for disaster prevention, availability of fun multimedia content for the fun generation and provision of news on demand in audio format. The overall objective of the MINDS project has been to remove the barriers for circulation of digital content within the European society.
